- Why should you attend our SJCC ASG meetings? In Community Topics·August 22, 2020You've probably seen us promote attendance at our meetings in either your inbox or on social media, but are you still a little stuck on the why? Why should you attend an SJCC ASG meeting? Why should you care about what we discuss or the information that we provide students? You should attend our SJCC ASG meetings for three key reasons: You may not need us, but we need you 😫 - We have to hear from our students ensure that we are communicating their needs to the college. We provide you with first-hand information about the college 📰 - This information can include changes in registration and new requirements for programs. We attend every faculty meeting that you can think of (really) and this means that we have information for you before it's released to the general public. - Overcoming Burnout from Online CoursesIn Community Topics·November 6, 2020Online courses have become the new norm for students across the world as we try to keep eachother safe during the COVID19 pandemic. However, many of us are struggling to simply complete assignments every week. There are so many events happening in the world right now where completing assignments can begin to feel dreadful. What is "burnout" and how can you identify if you are currently experiencing it? Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands which we are all under the constant demand of turning in assignments and attending virtual classes. Ways To Identify Burnout The best way to prevent burnout is to learn the signs and be honest with yourself: Constant Exhaustion - People that are going through burnout may experience the feeling of being physically and emotionally depleted. Other physical symptoms may include headaches, stomachaches, and appetite or sleeping changes. Desire for Isolation - People with burnout tend to feel overwhelmed. As a result, they may stop socializing and confiding in friends, family members, and co-workers. Search for Distractions - People choose to deal with burnout by unplugging from their computers and embarking on solo-vacations, but many people are turning to marijuana and other drugs as a way to escape. Increased Irritability - Burnout can cause people to lose their cool with friends, co-workers, and family members more easily. Coping with recent stressors like preparing for a online meetings, helping kids with schoolwork, and tending to household tasks also may start to feel insurmountable, especially when things don’t go as planned. Frequent Illnesses - Burnout, like other long-term stress, can lower your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds, the flu, and insomnia. Burnout can also lead to mental health concerns like depression and anxiety. Stress Is Inevitable, Burnout Is Not Burnout can look different for everyone, but that is why we need to have the conversation within ourselves to identify when we are being pushed to our limits. It is important to spot the signs early on and prevent burnout from taking over our lives. We know that stress is inevitable, but burnout does not have to be. If you are experiencing burnout, understand that it is okay to take a day off from work or school. Take a moment to reflect on how you're feeling, set reasonable goals for your future, and make a plan to get there. As your student representation, we must find ways to enhance and improve our college experience semester to semester. Although are not able to host events on campus at this time, we can still strive to improve your experience by providing resources and fostering a safe space for you to unload stress during this time. - Anyone take Global Issues with Prof. Mary Conroy? In Campus QuestionsOctober 26, 2020Best answerI just finished GLOBL 001 right now, which is the first half of the series, and plan on taking GLOBL 002. I suspect they're kind of similar. It's not perfect - the people who gravitate to GLOBL tend to be very interesting, and I wish we had more discussions with each other! And I wish we went deeper into the controversies regarding different topics. But it was, overall, a very educational course. Professor's supplemental material and the textbook worked well together. The assignments are really low stress. That means there's more time to explore the topics that matter to me, and as I said, I think most GLOBL students are already motivated to care. I also lost internet service for a long while this semester and the course was flexible enough to have me recover. But that's GLOBL 001 not 002. Sorry I can't give a direct answer.24
- Anyone take Global Issues with Prof. Mary Conroy? In Campus QuestionsOctober 26, 2020@Vina Le Yes, I had Conroy. I believe it was a regular class. The minimum workload is extremely tiny, maybe 1 hr / wk assignment + 2 hrs / wk reading. It's a super easy course to "pass." But then you want to understand more, and fall into a rabbit hole, spending hours reading the World Fact Book, studying UN articles, Nobel Prize winners.. Each assignment says "Pick one country/winner/event/etc," but in reality I probably spent 6 hrs / wk "extra." It's very much a "what you make it" course.2
- Anyone take Global Issues with Prof. Mary Conroy? In Campus QuestionsNovember 20, 2020Hello! I took Internet GLOBL-001 with Mary Conroy not 2, But I also assume they are similar. The class material was interesting and the overall difficulty of the class was about standard for college. The work was engaging and made us think about the world and how we all interact with each other. The class also brought up pivotal issues that have plagued us in the past or plague us today. All in all the class was engaging and interesting, but it was all about reading from the textbook and doing the work. No lectures were ever given and the teacher contacted us all only twice the entire semester. One Major issue I had with the class was that the teacher ended the semester without telling us our grades for our final paper, so its still up in the air as to what my grade is at the moment. I took the course fully online from AUG- OCT. The class was not very time consuming or difficult. I spent about 1-3 Hrs a week on the assignments and reading. I didn't enjoy or hate the class and personally I do not feel as I got much out of it.21
